Praised for her vocal brilliance, musical intelligence and compelling stage presence, Ruzan Mantashyan is regarded as one of the leading lyric sopranos of her generation.
Born in Armenia, she began her musical education as a pianist at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan before studying voice with Valey Harutyunov. She continued her training at Mirella Freni’s Accademia di Belcanto in Modena and completed her Master’s degree under Hedwig Fassbender at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt. From 2014 to 2016, she was a member of the Atelier Lyrique of the Opéra national de Paris.
An award-winning artist, Mantashyan was a finalist and recipient of the Special Prize at the Francisco Viñas International Singing Competition in Barcelona and won the Toti dal Monte Competition.
She has since appeared at many of the world’s foremost opera houses, including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra national de Paris, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Komische Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, Oper Zürich, Dutch National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, and the Opéra de Lausanne.
Her repertoire includes some of the great lyric soprano roles, among them Mimì (La Bohème), Tatyana (Eugene Onegin), Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), La Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro), Marguerite (Faust), Violetta (La Traviata), Rusalka, Alice Ford (Falstaff), Rachel (La Juive), Micaëla (Carmen), and the title role in Cendrillon.
Recent highlights include Violetta at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, Fiordiligi and Alice Ford at the Wiener Staatsoper, and Tatyana at the Opéra national de Paris.
Forthcoming engagements include the title role in Rusalka at the Opéra national du Capitole de Toulouse, Mimì in La Bohème at the Norwegian National Opera in Oslo, and Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in a new production by Kornél Mundruczó.
